Secondary Functions

I'm not going anywhere this Summer. I'm too busy you see. Job hunting, house hunting and working on my dissertation ask too much of me. Regretably I can't fit in a carbon chugging flight to far away lands - not even up to Glasgow to walk the West Highland Way as planned.

Yet I don't think I have done too badly so far this summer.

Firstly, I made a couple of new friends. Met them in the lobby of the Swedish embassy, they have invited me to a film showing in a few weeks time - I hope there will be subtitles. They then introduced me to Jade's Jazz Bar. Great little place with a fantastic view of the sea - and some of the best music I have known. Great place to just kick back and chill. And to think it was right under my nose all that time and I never saw it.

I've also met Adam Reuters, a semi-famous journalist for - you guessed it - the Reuters news agency. I'm sure he must have had some far more important things to do but he was willing to talk to me for a few minutes. I have been subscribing to his rss feed now for months. I just wanted to say that I was something of a fan of his. Was pretty cool to actually meet the man behind the legend.

I was also able to nip down and take part in the PETA anti-sur protest. One of the main organisers, Fredddie, he lent me a bike and gave me a guided tour of the protest site. Someone has put a lot of work into it. Pretty extraordinary if you ask me. I hope it all goes well for them.

I was also able to witness the pretty impressive sight of the muck-up 'Darfur' refugee camp someone has set up near by. Quite a nice way to highlight this important issue. It's pretty criminal that the West can spare troops to safeguard oil supplies but looks the other way when it doesn't have any vested interests at stake. Why not make Sudan the functioning liberal democracy that sets an example to the rest? Let's make Sudan the start of the 'westernising' of Africa. If we don't conquer their hearts and minds. Osama might.

So all in all, not a terribly inactive summer, despite my real world limitations. And a relatively carbon friendly summer too.

Anyone interested in coming up to the Edinburgh festival should get in contact with me. Personally I will be running around trying to finish off my dissertation - but I will happily house any number of festival goers, if I can't make the most of it - no reason why somebody else shouldn't.

You're still having a more exciting summer than I am, dear heart, and good luck with the dissertating. I too have had to cancel my summer travel plans, due to extreme lack of funds in my case. I think the farthest I'm going to get is an eight hour drive up to Tennessee to visit family and an old high school friend whose life is apparantly going much better than mine, or so he says. It's been ages, but I do miss you, so at least send back a friendly hello if you haven't given up speaking to Americans entirely.

I'm sorry we didn't get to go on our holiday, and it looks like I really should have left you my computer so you could keep vacationing on secondlife. I think you're more productive there, anyway.
